Life without Fear Life

PERFECT IS BORING

“What is the pursuit of perfection really but the fear of failure?”

So here goes.

For quite some time I have been meaning to create a blog element to my existing teaching and dance practice.  Not only do I know that it makes sense (for so many reasons) but those close to me have egged me on to start.   So here I am, in 2018, launching not just my blog but also a new website and I am a mixture of excited and nervous.  Approaching this moment, I had to ask myself, why exactly has it taken me so long to do this?

For those of you who don’t know me that well (or at all!) you may not be aware that alongside my love of yoga and dance, I have always loved to write.  Any style or format, it doesn’t matter I love it.  I was the kid in school who looked forward to English and spent all her time writing or reading (when I wasn’t dancing of course). I even applied for a Creative Writing degree, just in case I didn’t get into the Dance course which I auditioned for (but I did and trust me there is a whole backstory there that will be featured in a future post). Yet I went through a pretty big period of my life where I never really wrote at all.  And come to think of it, a pretty big period of my life where I only danced a fraction of the amount that I had been accustomed to.  So why was that, and why have I suddenly re-embraced those two loves?

And the answer is...

It all boils down to Fear.  Yes, that’s right ladies and gentleman that old villain.  I used to believe that I was downright fearless.  However, looking back now, I can see that I was pretty much living in denial.  Yes, I did many things with confidence and gusto, but I still let fear of the unknown and fear of failure hold me back too often.  Heck, I still do! But at least now I am aware of it and can mostly own up to it.   So for ages, I had put of starting this blog and a new website because I wanted it to be perfect.  I was afraid that if what I produced wasn’t glossy enough, hashtag heavy or viral worthy that there was no point in even starting.  That is such a false notion though.  All the greatest ideas, art and performances are created through trial and error, risk and failures.  Why should I think that my endeavours should be any different?…

Life is so much more exciting with imperfections and mistakes.  I don’t know about you, but while I enjoy looking at those Instagram and social accounts with the tailored filters and the oh so perfectly held ‘moment’ postures, I can’t really relate to them.  Because they don’t accurately reflect or speak to my own life experience.  So you won’t see from me ‘Before and After’ pics, you won’t hear me speaking down to you from on up high, and you definitely will not see endless photos of me holding challenging postures with an expectant air of, ‘well go on – you should be doing this too!’.

And now to Content

‘That’s all very well you are thinking…’, but what does that mean content wise?? Well you can expect a lot of movement based content, broken down yoga sequences and dance choreography.  Frank and open discussions on wellbeing without all that b***shit and dogma.  Navigating around how to live a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, while still enjoying life and not breaking the bank! All of this influenced by all my passions (including those perceived to be ‘naughty’ by the wellness industry) and my location – the bustling monster metropolis that is London, UK.

The aim of this blog and MimiLumi Presents is not to make you feel like you should be better – because you are already wonderful.  Its aim is to hopefully inspire you to learn more about yourself through movement and creativity.  Challenge you to belief in yourself and love yourself more.  Most importantly, spur you on to try new things! Not because you feel like you have to or should do, but because you want new experiences! As that is all life is, a collection of experiences (both wonderful and difficult) strung imperfectly together.  So let’s get out there and enjoy it! Yes, that Fear will always be there, but let’s not let it hold us back for more than a moment’s hesitation.
